Ford F150 Diesel
- First diesel was introduced about 25 years ago
- The first engine was a 6.9L diesel V-8 that produced 175 hp and 318 lb-ft of torque
- In 1988 the F Series engine bumped up to 7.3L peak horsepower increased to 185 hp at 3,300
- The F Series engine is good for 250,000 miles when it is properly maintained.
Ford diesel was first introduced 25 years ago. FoMoCo teamed with International Harvester for the Ford engine. The first F Series engine was a 6.9L V-8 with technologies such as mechanical indirect injection and natural aspiration for the Ford. The F Series diesel was not the most powerful but had gobs of torque and was tough as nails. The early generation F Series engines laid the ground work for today's award-winning F Series diesel Power Stroke. The Ford diesel program would showcase sophisticated F Series diesel engine technologies in the industry and later innovate all new designs that would boost refinement of diesel for power output for the Ford diesel.
This started for F Series in 1982 when FoMoCo offered its first F Series diesel engine in their pickups. They chose Navistar for the F Series, the parent company of International Harvester Engine Group. They provided Ford with a 6.9 liter powerful V-8 for there Ford diesel truck. The 6.9L Ford diesel V-8 produced 175 hp. and 318 lb-ft of torque with 20.7:1 compression. In 1984, a boost in compression to 21.5:1 jumped torque to 338 lb ft. in the Ford diesel trucks. These Ford engines are good for over 250,000 miles when properly maintained.
In 1988, the bore size increased cu liters to 7.3L the for the F Series diesel. The stroke remained the same with horsepower increased slightly to 185 hp, torque remained the same. The Ford diesel did however offer more torque at lower RPM's. This improved the off-idle response for the Ford Diesel with a small decrease in fuel economy. By 1991, diesel turbo kits started to appear as the buyers of diesel F Series were looking for more power. the Ford was forced to get more power by turbocharging the diesel engine. Turbocharging the diesel would be the most effective route to meet the power demands put on F Series. This would make Ford owners more content with their truck.
In 1993, Ford introduced a new turbocharged 7.3L F Series engine. By adding extra boost, the power ratings on this Ford diesel were increased to 190 hp and 388 lb-ft of torque. Modified for the added boost, the Ford diesel was still incredibly reliable. This Ford diesel engine was available for one year only and the way to tell was to look for the small F Series "TURBO DIESEL" emblems on the Ford fenders.
The 1993 Ford engine package satisfied the Ford customers and gave extra time for Ford and International to put the finishing touches on a new combination for the Ford diesel, the one that would change everything for Ford Diesel power stroke engines.
