There are different types of suspension Kits, and just as many designs for the different types of suspensions and lift kits that are available for the types of vehicles manufactured. For this article we are dealing with F Series Ford trucks mainly F150
The earlier model Ford F150 2 wheel drives (1975) had Fords TIB (Twin I Beam) with coil springs and Leaf Springs in the rear. Raising these trucks is simple, and economical. You get a fair amount of height by installing longer set of lift springs in front and lift blocks in the rear. If you wanted to lift higher, it gets a bit more complex.. There are several things to be addressed with these lift kits. Because they extend the length of the front springs it drops the front axle lower in relationship to the original location, which means that you are decreasing the caster. This needs to be addressed because the caster setting is what helps keep your truck headed in a strait line. To lift the rear is a little easier. Use lift blocks to adjust the height to match your front. (NOTE: Remember to always lift the front first). You will also need longer brake lines and longer shocks front and rear. Make sure that the drive shaft angle is not to far out. Take your vehicle to an alignment shop for help with your lift kit alignment
The older four wheel drive Ford F150 have coil springs and a solid axle set up. The lift procedures are similar to the TIB. The rear is the the same block lift kits. You may want to use after market leaf springs. Do not forget the shocks and brake line kits..
The newer F150 lift kits are different. Both the 4 wheel drive lift kits and 2 wheel drive lift kits are Sub frame type lift kits. These lift kits can be very involved. Some lift kits are engine and/or transmission specific. Some lift kits may require steering knuckle modifications, new axles or drive lines. The only way I would think installing any lift kits on a newer F150 is by purchasing one of our name brand kits. Kits are made in several different heights and different features. All of our lift kits have detailed instructions They have kits to raise your F150, shock, brake line and hardware kits, blocks and spring kits. Most of the kits can be installed by the intermediate Ford freaks who has the tools and a flat place to work The lift kits come with very understandable instructions with pictures. Some SUSPENSION kits plus all your F150 needs will be taken care of and you will always receive excellent customer service.
Thank you, DEAN.
